Nielsen’s Heuristics
Nielsen and Molich's 10 heuristics
Visibility of system status.
Match between system and the real world.
User control and freedom.
Consistency and standards.
Error prevention.
Recognition rather than recall.
Flexibility and efficiency of use.
Aesthetic and minimalist design.
Help users recognize, diagnose and recover from errors.
Help and documentation.
Shneiderman’s Eight Golden Rules
Strive for consistency by utilizing familiar icons, colors, menu hierarchy, call-to-actions, and user flows when designing similar situations and sequence of actions.
Enable frequent users to use shortcuts.
Offer informative feedback.
Design dialogue to yield closure.
Offer simple error handling.
Permit easy reversal of actions.
Support internal locus of control.
Reduce short-term memory load.

develop category-specific heuristics that apply to a specific class of products as a supplement to the general heuristics.
:check: competitive analysis
:check: user testing
:check: abstract principles
One way of building a supplementary list of category-specific heuristics is to perform competitive analysis and user testing of existing products in the given category and try to abstract principles to explain the usability problems that are found (Dykstra 1993).
supply the evaluators with a typical usage scenario
Select your evaluators
not necessarily be end users
be experts in the industry type
Brief your evaluators
what you do & cover
standardized -> same instructions
focus on a selection of tasks
First evaluation phase
2 hours
use the product freely to gain interaction & scope
go through the interface as least twice
:check: get a feel for the flow of the interaction and the general scope of the system
:check: allows the evaluator to focus on specific interface elements while knowing how they fit into the larger whole
Second evaluation phase
run-through which applying the chosen heuristics
focus on individual elements & look at how well they fit in the overall design
not need to interpret the evaluator's actions.
Record problems
record problems evaluators encounter when carrying out tasks
problems & usability principles violated
Debriefing session
suggest potential solutions for these problems on the basis of the heuristics.
collaboration between the different evaluators
problem list
a brainstorming mode and would focus on discussions of possible redesigns to address the major usability problems and general problematic aspects of the design
:check: 3~5 evaluators is sufficient
