What is Tourette's syndrome?
A neurological condition that affects the brain and the nervous system.
Characterised by a combination of involuntary noises and movements called tics.
Tics can be: -Vocal such as grunting, coughing or shouting out words.
-Physical such as jerking of the head or jumping up and down.
-Simple such as making a small movement or uttering a single sound.
-Complex such as making a series of physical movements or speaking a long phrase.
What causes Tourette's syndrome?
The causes of this syndrome are unknown. However, it is thought to be linked to problems which an area of the brain known as basal ganglia.
Basal ganglia are a group of specialized brain cells that are located deep inside the brain that help regulate the body's movement.
In people with Tourette's, it appears tics are the result of a temporary problem occurring inside the basal ganglia which disrupts the decision-making process.
How does Tourette's impact a persons physical development?
May be hard for them to complete day to day tasks. This is because if they are cooking food in the plan they could put themselves at danger with their tics.
As a result of this, the individual may lose weight and be at risk of other health issues.
Severe tics have also been known to result in physical pain and actual injuries. People therefore, find it hard to go outside if they are constantly in pain.
How does Tourette's impact an individuals intellectual development?
For a child that suffers with Tourette's. they may struggle at school with learning due to having continuous tics.
If the child then gets bullied at school because of the tics, it may result to them no longer going to school which will impact their learning and knowledge.
How does Tourette's impact an individuals social development?
Scared to go outside as they could get weird looks and get abused.
Anxious to speak to strangers or even close ones as they are worried they may say something wrong.
Psychological distress, feelings of frustration and low mood in general.
How does Tourette's impact an individuals social development?
May impact the individual socially as they may have 'friends' who are now too embarrassed to hand around with them as the attention is going to be on them when the person has a tic.
As a result, they may find it hard to communicate with other individuals as they are frightened that they will embarrass them.
