Blackboard Users 1-3 Years
Match between system and the real world
Some content feels "hidden"
Hard to find lecture recordings
Language not hard to read
Everything is written in simple terms
Preferences for more generalised terminology
Buttons like "HiQ" and "ePortfolio" should be replaced or given descriptions of their functions
Clear and concise
Some things could be phrased better
Sometimes I cannot find reading lists and/or unavailable to read specific things that are on blackboard that is required for us to read before tutorials.
"Blackboard pages are hard to understand"
for a technology university, you’d expect the main source of information to be formatted in a way that is understandable
Recognition rather than recall
Growing accustomed to Bb over time
1 year (x2)
3 months (x2)
"Not long"
3rd time logging in
2-4 weeks
3-5 times
"idk like 15 minutes"
2-3 weeks
6 months
Not too long. Took a bit to get used to reach unit structuring it differently.
2 weeks (x5)
1 semester (x2)
About a month (x2)
I take a few months to get used to it every time they update and change it
at least half of the semester
2 months
f**king yonks
not long - used it in one subject in high school
2-3 times
3 weeks
had to get used to it quickly, assignment due in week 1
not long - its fairly intuitive
not long - prior experience from USC Blackboard
Still having difficulty
Help users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors
User regularly has to re-enter Bb to remedy errors
User "tries again later"
Student acknowledges that one error encountered was when a lecturer set something out incorrectly, and not on behalf of the platform itself
User acknolwedged the error was caused by their browser
Student regretted leaving assignment submission to the last minute because Bb denied them access to the relevant materials for submission due to internal errors
Errors caused by faculty
Takes too long to load and then times out, when I click on the updates half of the screen is covered by a grey bar??
Mostly the errors encountered are external, like maintenance
Warnings of missed deadline despite group assessment having been submitted
Error prevention
Lecture recordings not compatible with one user's laptop
No errors encountered (14x)
Consistency and standards
Each subject page has course content placed differently
Each subject page has a different layout
Unit co-ordinators post content differently from subject to subject
Each of subjects have different setups, some appear random.
Had to find assignment under "Learning Resources", not "Assessment"
"My law courses are usually organised well into folders but I've seen some journalism courses with haphazard looking blackboards"
Users with double degrees have noted inconsistencies of content accessibility between the two courses
Lecture recordings and tutorial materials are in different places depending on subject
Contact info, assignment submission and lecture recordings inconsistent
11 students of this experience group believe blackboard's navigation is consistent, one of which only had one subject.
Student had the same method for all subjects to submit assignments (Turnitin) but had to go through different navigations to find grades
Each blackboard subject page has very different layouts just depending on how the lecturer chooses to do it
"plspls make turnitin pages the same for every subject. so stressful."
"Inconsistent navigation"
Flexibility and efficiency of use
Website is slow
Broken links to previous subjects
Issues submitting assignments
Users often have to click through too many links to find the relevant information
Broken hyperlinks
Navigation problems
Aesthetic and minimalist design
Structure of blackboard in each course feels "random" and uncomfortable to look at for long periods of time
Majority of users rate layout and design at 6-7.
The actual design is unappealing LMAO, and id like for the layout to be the same across all units and bachelors (e.g. layout for business has the exact same tabs as the layout for creative industries)
Some subject pages are user-friendly while others are not.
Visibility of system status
Took a user several attempts to sign up to their subject group for IFB101 on Bb
Broken hyperlinks
Blackboard is offline regularly
System outages restricting usage
Negative comment from one user was Bb constantly crashing
Blackboard isn't always announcing maintenance closure in advance.
Stop bringing down Bb. Set up a weekly update.
Blackboard has been down multiple times this semester at QUT. Aside from scheduled maintenance, I’ve never seen a Blackboard outage like it in the past three and a half years at USC. To put it mildly, I’m disappointed in your Blackboard, particularly at such a large university.
System outages resulting in missed deadlines
Help and documentation
Blackboard pages are hard to understand
"I just figure it out"
Asking friends who have used Bb before x2
11 find it easy to get help
Contacting HiQ
"I usually just leave it"
"I don't know where to find it"
17 don't find it easy to get help
"No because blackboard isn’t working to find that information and if you do happen to find info on how to fix your problem the likelihood of it working is small"
Asks for help from classmates
User control and freedom
Users able to undo an error on Bb
19 No
17 yes
1 user mentions they have "pressed the wrong button", but were able to easily undo the mistake
