Definition: Formative assessments are used the monitor student progress and gather information so that teachers can adjust instruction to improve student learning. There are two types of formative assessments: informal and formal.
Informal Examples: Simple observations made in class, asking students questions in class
Formal Examples: Everyday graded assignments, exit tickets
2.Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Interim assessments and benchmarks are used to gather data throughout the year at predetermined points in time. They do not provide much data that can be used to adjust instruction in the moment but can provide data on how to adjust instruction in the future.
Examples: six weeks district assessments, unit tests
Definition:Performance assessments are assessments that require students to perform a task in order to display knowledge.
Examples: projects, portfolios
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are given before student learning has occurred over a certain topic to determine how much students already know about the content. They help teachers determine achievement gaps in student knowledge so that they can plan to address the gaps accordingly.
Examples: unit pre-test, mind maps made before the start of a unit
Definition: Summative assessments are used to evaluate student progress and gather information to compare against a predetermined standard. Summative assessments are also used to evaluate whether a student has mastered content.
Examples: final exams, STARR tests, cumulative class project
