- - - - argument that answers the question "so what?"- tell why the author thinks the topic is important
      - most often directs in the introduction or the beginning of the second paragraph, and then at the end of conclusion. sometimes is not written by the author, should do it by yourself
      - summarizing an argument - to pinpoint the overarching idea
      - underline or write it down
      - primary idea that the author wants to convey
    - - authors write in response to other author's ideas (they can agree or disagree)
      - authors spend a significant portion of a passage discussing ideas with which they do not agree ("imply skepticism", rhetorical questions, imply, suggest, support words, not prove)
      - i say - the point of the passage, they say - counterargument
      - a passage may contain more then 3 points of view, always underline or draw a star near each new idea
      - helps to identify the point before the author states it. the main point is going to be the opposite of what "they say"
      - Linking words : however, but, nevertheless - signal the transition between "they and i say"
    - - the point is an extremely condensed summary of the passage
      - read larger sections of fiction more closely, without skimming
      - look up after charecters (introduction, conclusion)
      - passage can be divided into to sections (introduction of one character and then another or so)

        flashback - a technique in which author descries an event that occurred before the main action of the story
        
        events can be mentioned in the passage in an order that is different from the order in which they are actually occurred
    - - test will test your "backwards" understanding
      - as the main point comes before supporting examples, you should back up and read from at least a sentence before the line reference
