What is a résumé?
A document that gives the potential employer an overview of your employment and educational history
Don't
Leave unexplained gaps in employment
Have typos or grammatical errors
Provide personal info (age, religious affiliation, ethnicity, photo)
Use a distracting/non-professional font
Include "overused" buzzwords
Detail-oriented
Team player
Hard worker
Leadership
Passionate
Strategic
Experienced
Focused
Creative
Certified
Specialized
Do
Be concise (it will be reviewed in 20 seconds or less)
Include
BUZZWORDS
Adapted
Achieved
Launched
Negotiated
Improved
Guided
Facilitated
Exercised
Validated
Resolved
Upgraded
Organized
Instead of simply listing job duties for each previous position you've held, try to write
"accomplishment statements
Bad: Rang up concession orders and gave back change
GOOD:
Adapted to varying customer occupancy while streamlining customer service
Resolved customer complaints by mediating disputes and finding common ground
Put the best stuff "above the fold"
(aka. on the top 1/3 of your résumé)
That's what the employer will see first - and will serve as a hook to keep on reading!
Organize your work experience/educational history in reverse-chronological order (most recent experiences at the top of the list)
Don't clutter your résumé with industry jargon
