      - Detect changes in rate of rotational movement. Do not respond when head motionless or rotating at constant speed : Dynamic equilibrium
    - - Sensing linear direction of head
      - Sensory hairs protrude into endolymph in gelatinous mass containing calcium carbonate crystals (otoliths)
      - Stimulation:
        
        Linear acceleration or deceleration, or linear changes in position of head cause deflection of otoliths
        
        Pulls otolithic membrane and bends hair cells
        
        Impulses in CN VIII informing brain of head position relative to vertical axis
      - 2 (utricule and saccule)
      - Static equilibrium
