Epicentre was 80km (50km) to the north-west of Nepal/s capital (Kathmandu) in the foothills of the Himalayas
Occurred at destructive plate boundary where Indo-Australian plate is colliding with the Eurasian plate at a rate of 45mm a year
Very shallow, just 15km below the surface
Primary Effects

Of the earthquake...
9000 people died, 20,000 injured with 8 million affected (1/3 of Nepal's population)

Electricity, water, sanitation and communication were affected
1.4 million people needed food, shelter and water in the weeks after the earthquake

50% of shops destroyed, affecting food supplies as well as people's livelihoods

The result of the primary effects and include tsunamis, fires and landslides

Responses
Immediate
Search and rescue teams deployed as well as water and medical support which arrived quickly from India, China and the UK
Helicopters rescued those caught in avalanches on Mt. Everest and delivered supplies to those in stranded villages cut off by landslides

300,000 people migrated from Kathmandu to seek shelter
Long-term
Roads repaired and landslides were cleared and lakes which were formed by landslides needed to be emptied to avoid flooding
