Culture of the 1950's
American Abundance
Spread of wealth
almost everyone was becoming standard in the workplace as many of them were beginning to make a good amount of money where they could support their family without many issues. This became standard for many americans
along with people earning more money many of them had way more leisure. They had more vacation time and less hours of work a week.
organization man
this book helped to show the spread of conformity and how many businesses were looking for people who would fit their business. This book helped to show how America was moving to conformity.
-
growth of suberbia
after the war (as stated below) many veterans returning from the war were forced to move, many however had no place to move, people such as Levitt had a response to this. The suburbs. An area where all of the homes looked the same and were located almost exactly on top of each other.
Americans seemed to love this new way to live and essentially created a new lifestyle for many Americans. This seems to go against conformity as many wanted to adopt a new way of life.
franchises
franchises became huge in the 1950s. Franchises are companies that make many stores in different places that are essentially the same place.
McDonalds were huge at this time, as one of the first big franchises at the time. This made it very easy for many people to get food at a relatively cheap price. Many people jumped on this bandwagon of getting McDonald's and getting into making their own franchises.
Families of the 1950's
baby boom
there was a major increase in the amount of babies as many people were making babies. Because of conformity this made many other people want babies to fit in with everyone else.
women
after the fallout of the war women were sent back home to take back their stay at home mom jobs. Many wanted to stay in their jobs during the war
-
divorce
after the war many families were in tension over their roles in their homes. This lead to many families getting divorced. This tension sprouted as many woman were set on their new way of life with earning money and being heads of the house many did not want to give that up. However many men did not want to give up their traditional roles. This lead to tension which lead to divorce. This also went against what many felt was the perfect American family meaning that they went against conformity.
housing crisis
veterans who returned from the war came home to find out that there was no place to stay. Many had to move into crammed apartments or move into a relatives home.
Technological Advances
electronics
with the new way of life being living in the suburbs this forced families into buying a car. The car allowed people to live in a suburb as they did not have a form of public transportation yet the car allowed them to be able to live into these parts of the area.

medicine
medical advances ended up saving lives but also left there drugs to be dealt with. With these new foundations set inside of the medicine industry it allowed many people to change the way they would live their lives. For example many people decided to not beat and abuse their children as many saw it as unfair to the children and many children were beginning to have a say in their household.
space (hidden figures)
as seen in the movie hidden figures America and the Soviet Union were in a tight race to send the first man to space. This caused many Americans to embrace the American spirit. Eventually American lost the space race but they would get the first man to the moon.
the hidden figures movie showed how much women had helped with the space race and how they would end up sending us to space and bringing our man down safely.
Mass Media
television
through the television people were able to advertise their items so that more people could pay, This came more common place as time went on
people were able to spread their ideas and their word as well as communicate and entertain through the television. Eventually televisions reached 90% of homes.

Hollywood
In Hollywood many believe that some of the films being produce were pro- soviet. This forced the coming together of the House Un-American Activities Committee. When 43 witnesses were asked how they felt about the pro-soviet films many said that they felt that the soviets had infiltrated the system. Because of how many of them had supported what the Americans said and felt, this leads me to believe that the 1950s was an age of conformity to a great extent.
However the ten that would not conform were named as the Hollywood Ten, and they were sent to prison. This was because many felt that because they did not conform they were sent to jail which almost forced others to conform as if they did not they would be sent to jail.
radio
people began to use the radio to advertise their items so they can gain more money. These became more common place as time went on
the radio began to shift it's focus into telling about the news which helped to spread information to more people, as many people at this point were using the radio
The Youth
rock 'n' roll
in the 1950's rock and roll came into existence and everybody loved it. With legends like Elvis it was hard for everyone in America to not fall for this new type of music
beat movement
a group of poets and writers that were non conformists and that wanted to spread their word through the beat movement

Consensious: America in the 1950's was a time of conformity to a great extent. Yet it was not conformity for the United State's way yet in the way of following what everyone else would do.
