Her teacher would spell out a word into her hand or make her touch it then spell it. Then have her spell it back.

How she influenced me was that she was blind and deff, and she wasn't afraid of what the world threw in her way.

The authors purpose was to show the reader how some of her childhood was like. The Purpose was too reflect.

compare: When she was a toddler she still had her ability to see and hear she was bright and happy. When she lost here ability to hear and see she became frustrated and angry about this.
contrast: As a toddler she was very happy, but sometimes wasn't happy at all. When she lost her ability she got very agree and frustrated no one could make her happy accept for her mother.
