CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM STIMULANTS - Histamine
Antihistamine
Mechanism of Action:
Antihistamines is used to treat allergic diseases. It is a competitive antagonism of histamine binding to cellular receptors which are present on nerve endings, smooth muscles. Once it binds to the receptors it prevents histamine from eliciting a response.
Indications:
Hypersensitivity reactions to drugs.
Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria
Allergic Conditions
Motion Sickness
Contraindications:
Heart Disease
Glaucoma
Hyperthyroidism
Epilepsy
Diabetes
Nursing Considerations:
Side Effects:
Dry mouth, nose and throat.
Increased appetite and weight gain.
Dizziness
Upset Stomach
Drowsiness or sleepiness
Changes in Vision
Storage Condition:
Store in room temrparture. Keep away from moisture, heat and direct sunlight. Do not freeze.
Route of Administration:
These drugs are usually given orally , parenteral and rectal.
