Assessments
Formative
-
Examples: Quizzes, Bell Ringers, Oral Questioning
I often have my bell ringer for the beginning of class be a review over content covered in the last couple of days in the classroom. This helps me evaluate who is understanding and who needs more practice.
Benchmark/Interim
An assessment focused on student success based on set standards and curriculum. It is also used to project future success.
Examples: STAAR, MAP, SAT, ACT
-
Summative
-
Examples: District Assessments, Unit tests, Essays
Our district assessment we take every 6 weeks is what we use as a summative assessment in our classroom.
Performance
An assessment focused on a student's ability to perform a task rather than "testing" their knowledge by traditional means. Usually is graded based on a collection of tasks rather than just one.
Examples: Portfolios, Performances, Presentations
-
Diagnostic
An assessment that is used to determine a student's prior knowledge, strengths, and weaknesses. This is used to prepare the instruction for a unit.
Examples: Pre-tests, Google forms/polls, Oral Questioning
For the past two weeks we have been giving our students a "pre-assessment" before we teach a unit, so we can have better knowledge of what they know, and adjust instruction accordingly.
