Atoms are made of three types of sub-atomic particle: neutrons and protons in the nucleus and electrons orbiting the nucleus.

When an electron gains energy, they jump around within the atom as they gain or lose energy.

Model of atoms
Bohrs
The Bohr model shows that the electrons in atoms are in orbits of differing energy around the nucleus. The energy level an electron normally occupies is called its ground state.
Rutherfords
Rutherford's model shows that an atom is mostly empty space, with electrons orbiting a fixed, positively charged nucleus in set.
Plum Pudding Model
Atoms are composite objects, made of pieces with positive and negative charge, and that the negatively charged electrons within the atom were very small compared to the entire atom.
