Instructional Design for Distance Education Simonson, M., Smaldino, S., and Zvacek, S. (2014). Teaching and Learning at a Distance: Foundations of Distance Education, 6th Edition. Information Age Publishing.
Quote:"...teaching at a distance requires planning and organizing. However, teaching at a distance, whether synchronous or asynchronous, requires that greater emphasis be placed on the initial planning phase" (Simonson et al., 2014, pp 127).
Reflection:This quotation hits pretty close to home. I am both a teacher of and a student in distance education classes. The reading provides an orderly approach to planning for distance education, emphasizing not only the necessity of starting early but also giving some salient points that should be addressed in the planning phase. I intend to utilize the best practices from this chapter as a checklist for the design of my future courses.
