Unit 4 Cells to Organism
Science Words
-
nucleus
the central and most important part of an object, movement, or group, forming the basis for its activity and growth.
chromatin
the material of which the chromosomes of organisms other than bacteria (i.e., eukaryotes) are composed. It consists of protein, RNA, and DNA.
cytoplasm
the material or protoplasm within a living cell, excluding the nucleus.
organelle (study)
In eukaryotic cells, the structures within the cytoplasm that break down food, move wastes, and store materials.
endoplasmic reticulum
a network of membranous tubules within the cytoplasm of a eukaryotic cell, continuous with the nuclear membrane. It usually has ribosomes attached and is involved in protein and lipid synthesis.
-
Golgi body (study)
cell organelles consisting of stacks of membrane-covered sacs that package and move proteins to the outside of the cell.
-
lysosome
an organelle in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells containing degradative enzymes enclosed in a membrane.
cell wall
a rigid layer of polysaccharides lying outside the plasma membrane of the cells of plants, fungi, and bacteria. In the algae and higher plants, it consists mainly of cellulose.
-
tissue
any of the distinct types of material of which animals or plants are made, consisting of specialized cells and their products.
organ
a structure made up of different types of tissues that work together to do a specific job; for example, the heart.
