New Urban landscapes
Town centre mixed-use development - Mixed-use development is where there are instances of residential, commercial, cultural, institutional and industrial. Easy access for pedestrians eg Brindley Place, BedZed.
Fortress Landscapes - planned creates boundaries, increased polarisation of society. Gated residential areas. Calabassas
Gentrified areas - movement of affluent young people into an area which is more run-down and therefore cheaper to live. Money is invested into the area. House prices increase and this causes issues with the working class eg Oxford and the Jewellery Quarter
Edge cities - Is this the end of suburbia? suburbanisation and decentralisation cause suburbs to morph into city centre like areas. located near motorway junctions.
Post modern cities
A post modern city is a city that has changed in building and infrastructure due to changes in infrastructure
-
postmodernism - started as a critique, they see western world society as an outdated lifestyle that is impersonal and faceless, they celebrate diversity
Contemporary characteristics of megacities - urban sprawl, edge cities, high density living, residential differentiation, redevelopment and conservation, infrastructure, environmental problems.
-
difficulties arrive when infrastructure is owned by many different people, private and public, so infrastructure is changed without considering the impact on urban form
