Groundwater
the water present beneath Earth's surface in soil pore spaces and in the fractures of rock formations.
-
Weathering
the breaking down of rocks, soil, and minerals as well as wood and artificial materials through contact with the Earth's atmosphere, water, and biological organisms.
Clay
finely-grained natural rock or soil material that combines one or more clay minerals with traces of metal oxides and organic matter.
-
-
Erosion
the process of eroding or being eroded by wind, water, or other natural agents
-
-
Pollution
the presence in or introduction into the environment of a substance or thing that has harmful or poisonous effects.
-
Sinkholes
a cavity in the ground, especially in limestone bedrock, caused by water erosion and providing a route for surface water to disappear underground.
barrier islands
coastal landforms and a type of dune system that are exceptionally flat or lumpy areas of sand that form by wave and tidal action parallel to the mainland coast
Soil
mixture of organic matter, minerals, gases, liquids, and organisms that together support life
Silt
fine sand, clay, or other material carried by running water and deposited as a sediment, especially in a channel or harbor.

-
chemical weathering
the erosion or disintegration of rocks, building materials, etc., caused by chemical reactions (chiefly with water and substances dissolved in it) rather than by mechanical processes.
-
landslides
a form of mass wasting that includes a wide range of ground movements, such as rockfalls,
Acid precipitation
Any form of precipitation, including rain, snow, hail, fog, or dew, that is high in acid pollutants, especially sulfuric and nitric acid.
-
Zone of Saturation
the area in an aquifer, below the water table, in which relatively all pores and fractures are saturated with water
Watersheds
an area or ridge of land that separates waters flowing to different rivers, basins, or seas.
