'kumbh' means jar - said that the water of the Ganges was transformed into the nectar of immortality and four drops fell to earth (marking four sites)
timing of festival is carefully calculated by studying stars (linked with constellation of Aquarius)
if take part in mass bathing at dawn on day of new moon, said to release people from repeated cycle of birth and death
