Audio file formats
A file format for storing digital audio data on a computer system.
Is called the audio coding format and can be uncompressed, or compressed to reduce the file size.
Example
Uncompressed audio formats
WAV, AIFF, AU or raw header-less PCM.
Formats with lossless compression
FLAC, .ape, .wv, TTA, .m4a, MPEG-4 SLS, MPEG-4 ALS, MPEG-4 DST, WMA , and SHN.
Formats with lossy compression
Opus, MP3, Vorbis, Musepack, AAC, ATRAC and WMA.
Sound editing software
Wave Editors are digital audio editors and there are many sources of software available to perform this function.
Software which allows editing and generating of audio data.
Can be implemented completely or partly as library, as computer application, as Web application or as a loadable kernel module.
Example
WavePad, Audacity, FL Studio 12.1.2, Ardour, Wavosaur, Adobe Audition.
Analogue sound vs Digital sound
Analogue
Analog sound produces a smooth "wave" of energy vibrating directly from the source. In a traditional setup, a vinyl record vibrates a needle which feeds that energy directly through a copper wire to a cone to produce the sound.
Digital Sound
Digital samples the sound wave at certain points and turns each part of that wave into a block of information defined by a certain number of 0's and 1's. Those 0's and 1's define what noise is coming out at each point in the wave.
What is sound?
Sound waves caused by the vibrations of objects and radiate outward from their source in all directions
All sounds are vibrations traveling through the air as sound waves
A vibrating object compresses the surrounding air molecules (squeezing them closer together) and then rarefies them (pulling them farther apart).
