in moving through a distance, force does work which translates as energy transfer from the moving object or system to the moved system. Quantitatively the work done by a constant force F over a distance d in the direction of the force is the product F x d. This is also the energy transfer to the moved system.
If the force is not constant and not necessarily in the direction of the displacement, the ideas remain the same but we use vector calculus.

When a body is either at rest or moving with constant velocity (in a straight
line with constant speed), we say that the body is in equilibrium. For a body to
be in equilibrium, it must be acted on by no forces, or by several forces such that
their vector sum—that is, the net force—is zero
A force represents the action of one body on another. It can be
exerted by actual contact or at a distance, as in the case of gravitational
forces and magnetic forces.
A force is characterized by its point of
application , its magnitude , and its direction
