Christianity
The Story
Jesus in not the first person claiming/is claimed to be the Messiah
#
His followers start talking
"We will be saved"
Also dosen't charge money for his miracles like other do
Those miracles are considered false
That's because the supernatural does not always mean God
Nazareth
Tiny town
Super problematic
But people in General are unhappy with the Elites + Romans
Poor + Rebelious
Prophesy that the Messiah will come from Nazareth
Jesus was raised in Egypt
But when its safe he comes back to Nazareth
Is a carpenter (like his dad)
When Jesus is born all of the signs appear
Idk what they are tho
So 3 wise men go and Travel to see him
King hears about this and asks to meet Jesus
Actually wants to kill him tho
A Messiah is a King/Religious + Military leader
So Jesus is a threat to the system
The men somehow divert/delay the king and successfully meet Mary and her husband.
Mary + hubby successfully run away before the Kings finds them
King also orders to kill all children in the area
A new governor appears
Lots of taxes
More revolts
Supposedly gets a revelation at about this time
Seeks out John the Baptist
#
The first Christian Saint?
But this info is pretty shady because the Gospels were written many years later
Matthew #2
Longer
Talks about Jesus's earlier life + parentage
Tries to trace him back to Abraham
Luke #3
Even Longer
Same story + Early life
But has different details
Mark #1
Shortes
Talks about the last 3 years of his life
Easiest to understand
Ends in crucifixion, the empty tomb, and him meeting his disciples
John #4
Super Mystical
100 year difference
Important when Christianity Splits
Has greater effect in the West
.
Gospels are named after historical figures/names of disciples
But that's not legit
There are no direct records
Jesus's followers were mostly working men who didn't have a Greek education
NO gospels are written within the range of his death
(so the people who wrote them didn't actually know him)
His return was expected to be soon so nobody wrote anything down
Gospels were written Greek and were meant /used to convert others
John the Baptist
He baptized a lot of people
Put them in holy water to wash away the original sin
(a form of spiritual cleansing)
Is a super Holy Jew
When Jesus comes a long and is cleansed the heavens open up
Lots of ppl see this
"Jesus the son of God"
Basics
Christianity is.....
Monotheistic
One god. He is good. He loves humanity.
Exclusionary
Rejects validity of other gods
Messianic
Figure destined to come again
Proselytizing
Conversion!
Why it worked
People had nasty short lives
99% were slaves
Promises that everybody will be saved
Doesn't matter who you are (appealed to slaves)
Super easy to become Christian
(in comparison to other religions)
Not a lot of rules
Everything/all sins can go away/be forgiven
Not a lot of other Gods did this in the area
Legalistic
Has a set of laws that is expected to be followed
