ELIZABETHAN ENGLAND SOCIETY
EDUCATION AT HOME
From age of 6, all children had to go to Sunday school where they learnt things like Lords prayer, 10 commandments and creed.
boys taught work skills
girls taught household activities.
Some children of noble households taught at home by tutor.
SCHOOLS
PETTY schools were small, local schools for mostly boys and provided basic education.
run by local parish priests.
lessons had v strong religious focus.

GRAMMAR
100 new grammar schools in Elizabeth reign
set up by private individuals
upper and middle class
LATIN and classical literature.
AFTER GRAMMAR, some boys went to OXFORD and CAMBRIDGE.
Uni in latin, and study undergraduate degree which then they would go into law/ medicine.
WHY DID POVERTY INCREA
ELIZABETHAN PASTIMES
Elizabeth and her courtiers often hunted deer and wild animals.
also fencing and tennis and bowls.
nobility and gentry liked hawking and hunting also
Normal people didn't have much time for leisure however there were several festival days.
football often popular but very violent and no rules.

Higher class would read new sonnets blank verse and read into history
all classes liked music. higher play lutes and spinets.
HIGHER classes would order musicians at their house.
all classes enjoyed watching bear baiting
puritans disapproved of cock fighting because it was on sunday (holy day)
THEATRES
first theatres built in 1570.

food production couldn't keep up
England also suffered poor harvests in 1550s and 1560s.
AGRICULTURE- fields were enclosed instead of shares to make farms which required fewer labourers leaving people unemployed.
exporting wall was more profitable than selling grain so many farmers turned to sheep farming.

Henry closed down monasteries which left poor helpless
Henry vlll fought lots of expensive wars which left soldiers and sailors unemployed.

ones who weren't able to help themselves due to being sick disabled old
Deserving poor
- people who wanted to work but couldn't find work
Vagabonds
- Criminals, beggars etc. Homeless people without jobs. If caught they would be whipped or imprisoned.
HOW THEY DEALTH WITH THE POOR
1563: STATUTE OF ARTIFICERS:
This said that magistrates could raise local funds for poor relief and fine people who refused to pay.
VAGABONDS ACT 1972:
local officials had power to decided poor relief rate
vagrants to be whipped and imprisoned.
towns and cities must find work for poor
1576 poor relief act:
people who refused work and could work sent to prison
jus help able bodies to find work.
