It is associated with a low social economic background, poor education, female sex and unemployment

Pathophysiology
It is expected to be due to peripheral and central hyper-excitability at the spinal or brain stem level . Altering the pain perception and somatisation
Hyperaesthesia: there will be increased perception to pain from a mild response
Allodynia: there will be an increased response to non painful stimuli
The levels of substance P in the body will be higher and also the trouble with pain sensation will affect both sides of the body equally

Possible contributing factors can be stress, genetics and social factors

Diagnosis
Involves using the American College of Rheumatologist Guidelines: they state that the pain needs to be widespread bilateral and be found in at least 11 of the 9 paired sites
General Blood Tests: U&E, LFT, TFT and FBC. Also will want to check RF, ANCA, ESR and CRP

The examination is preformed with digital palpation using the thumb in the designated areas. The pressure applied should not cause pain in someone without fibromyalgia
The sites that are tested for involve the anterior transverse space of C5-C7 , costo-chondral space of the 2nd rib and the upper gluteal quadrant
