Protostome from the Garden: Experiments with Live Pillbugs
Part I: Phylogeny of Animals and Pillbugs
Draw a phylogeny including
Protostomes, Deuterostomes
Ecdysozoans, Arthropods, Arachnids, Crustaceans, Isopods
Animals, Fungi, Choanoflagellates
Sowbugs, Pillbugs
Bacteria, Archaea, Eukarya
Part II: Observation of Pillbugs in a Moist Environment
Lay dish of pillbugs on your bench
Observe them for 10 minutes and make detailed notes about their movement
Part III: Reactions of Pillbugs to Differential Humidity
Transfer 5 isopods to each side of chamber. Put on lids.
Record number of isopods on each side of chamber every 30 minutes
Moisten filter paper on one side of chamber and don't let it run
Stop recording after 10 minutes
Put clean filter paper onto each side of chamber
Record a few observations too
Get choice chamber - 2 connected Petri dishes
Part IV: Designing an experiment to test pillbug behavior
Complete experiment then return your materials to wherever
Report Part IV results using form on blackboard
Create table to record your data and space for observations
Record hypothesis, materials, procedure
Design an experiment to study pillbug behavior using choce chamber and any combination of optional materials
Analysis to be Done Outside of Class
Make some graphs
Compare results to those of the rest of the class
