Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Etiology
Usually occurs when a person has been exposed to smoke
Pathophysiology
Causes direct injury to the lungs
Reduces oxygen transport due to Hb affinity to CO
CO at 2 mmHg can result in COHb > 40%
Left shift on the Oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve
Diagnostics
Recent smoke inhalation
COximetry measurment
Left shift on the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve
Differential diagnostics
SpO2 readings that don't match patient condition
Clinical signs and symptoms
SpO2 reading normal with altered signs and symptoms
Headaches
Cherry red skin
Nausea and vomiting
Syncope/coma
Increased RR and HR
Respiratory management
Provide oxygen
For unstable patients consider intubation and mechanical ventilation
