Chapter 12 Fractions
-
Models for fractions
Area models- good beginning place. Shows equal sharing and partitioning. Circular fraction pieces are good too.
-
Length models- Lengths are compared instead of areas. Use these frequently, and as number lines.
-
-
Set models- The set (of 12 for example) is the whole and the amount of pieces fewer than the whole are the parts. Can be hard because some amounts, such as 4/12, seem to be ¼ rather than 1/3. Try using different colors in this exercise.

Ratio- Expresses a relationship between two (and sometimes more) quantities or parts of quantities and compares their relative measures or counts. Can be part-part whole or part-whole.
Best way to help students is with multiple representations and make the math personal. Also use multiple approaches, and build in opportunities for them to explain and justify their thinking.
Comparing fractions
Several ways to do this
The larger the denominator, the smaller the value, is a concept that takes a long time to develop. It’s not just a rule to memorize. However, it should be revisited every now and then.
Comparing fractions- let the kids do some thinking and figuring before telling them the rules. Otherwise they will do less thinking and have a harder time in the future putting thought into why fractions are the way they are.
