Chapter 3:Movement Of Substances
NOTES*:An animal cell will swell or even burst in a solution of higher water potential than the cytoplasm. It is because it does not have a cell wall to protect it.
NOTES*:Placing an animal cell in a solution of low water potential will cause it to lose water. It will shinks and little spikes appear on the cell surface membrane and called crenation. An animal cell will become dehydrated and eventuall die when place in a solution of lower water potential
SURFACE AREA TO VOLUME RATIO:-
The rate of movement of a substance across the surface of a cell depends on how big the cell surface membrane area. The greater the area of cell surface membrane per unit volume, the faster the rate of diffusion of a substance for given concentration gradient
WHY IS TURGOR IMPORTANT IN PLANT?
Its play important role maintaining the shape of soft tissue in plants. Most leaves and young system especially herbaceous and non-woody plants that able to remain firm and erect because of the turgor pressure within the cells. When there is a higher rate of evaporation of water from the cells, they will lose their turgidity and the plants wits
