The Hurt Locker
Symbolism
Cigarettes
Commonly used in film to symbolise coolness and often used as a visual signal that two characters have just had sex
Bigelow is playing with the common usage of the cigarettes as a metaphor. James doesn't have sex on film, but he smokes cigarettes after tense scenes and sighs in a manner similar to characters who have had sex in films. This also fits the idea that he is an uncontrolled id. For James, danger is better than sex.
Uniforms
The way the different characters wear their uniforms symbolises their approach to their jobs. Sanborn follows protocol, so he also wears his uniform professionally. James ignores protocol and places desire before safety, so he wears his uniform in way that prioritises comfort over function. Look at how Eldridge wears his, and when he changes his style.

Beckham
James wants Beckham to see him as cool. Maybe Beckham does, or maybe he finds it easier to sell DVDs if he pretends. James thinks he cares a lot about Beckham, but he can't recognise his body. Maybe James had his little revenge trip because it was tense and exciting and he enjoyed it.
The bomb vest.
James wants to be heroic, and his attempt to free the man caught in the bomb vest are incredibly brave. However, he also fails. Although he means well, the victim doesn't even really understand his efforts, to save him.

This movie was directed by Katheryn Bigelow. What do you think her views on the Iraq War were? Did this movie make you rethink your opinion about the war (or war in general) at all?
What make someone a good leader? What makes someone a good person? Is James a good leader? Is he a good person?
