Louis XVI became the heir to the throne upon his father's death in 1765. He wanted to be a good king and help his subjects, but he faced enormous debt and rising resentment towards a despotic monarchy.
Robespierre became increasingly popular for his attacks on the monarchy and his advocacy of democratic reforms.
