Louis XVI became the heir to the throne upon his father's death in 1765. He wanted to be a good king and help his subjects, but he faced enormous debt and rising resentment towards a despotic monarchy. 
Robespierre became increasingly popular for his attacks on the monarchy and his advocacy of democratic reforms.

Louis XVI was killed in the Place de la Revolution in Paris. He walked steadfastly to the guillotine and was executed.
