What affects our choice of food?
Cultural
The work culture means the way of life. We learn to eat the foods that our families like, and the culture that you belong to.
Life style
Something such as your job or the activities you do can indicate what type of food you may eat. if you live a very busy and scheduled lifestyle then you would have less time to cook than someone who does not work or works shorter hours. for example, some one with a busy life style may have a pot noodle but someone with more time may cook a risotto or a stew.
Cost
Some people do not have much money, therefore they have to buy the lower budget items. Also some people like to buy the more expensive branded or organic items, this will cost more money. Usually, the more money you have means the more you eat out and the more food that you buy.
Health
Your health changes the food that you eat/buy. if you are overweight then you need a low calorie diet, if you have something wrong with your heart then you should not eat too much fat and if you are recovering from an illness then you should eat foods high in protein.
Religious/moral belief
Religious beliefs influence eating habits because religions often have laws related to foods. in some religions certain foods such as meat are not permitted as its cruel, dirty or unclean. For instance, most Buddhists are vegetarian.
Storage and cooking facilities
If you did not own a refrigerator then you would be limited with the types of foods that you could buy. You would have foods such as, dried, canned foods of fresh produce that you are going to eat not long after you purchased it.
Personal choice
The foods that you dislike, you are less likely to buy. Whereas the foods that you like are the ones that you will buy in your weekly shop. You decide weather you want to eat healthy or unhealthy.
Regional variation
Some people will choose to purchase locally produced food. They do this because they want to support the local farmers, its usually fresher, it has less food miles and a lower carbon footprint.
Food trends
The food that you see celebrity's of people that you look up to eating then you are more likely to try and buy those foods. You could see a cake that they ore all eating then you will try and make one similar to theirs.
Your skills
Some people are not very good cooks but others may be the best chef in the world. The better chef you are usually indicates how adventurous you would be with your food.
Availability
Choice of food depends on the type of food available in your country. In developing countries such as Africa, there is very little food available. They may not be able to grow produce because of climate, or because they cannot afford the equipment needed. In the UK we have lots of different kinds of food because we are a developed country.
Peer pressure
If you were over weight and everyone was picking o you for it then you would want to ear foods that have less calories and sugar because that would help you loose weight.
Food scares
Recent food scares that are in the news have a dramatic effect on the things we eat. Such as horse meat being sold as beef, health standards in factories, salmonella in eggs and e coli in meat products.
