Migration transition
-
when talking about migration: 'I think it's very individual. Some people are attached to the place they live but some people want to do something different with their life.' 1:50
Reason to move: 'Basically I was thinking about studying in the UK before. First I wanted to move to improve my English before starting university, I wanted to start working, earn some money so it would be an easy start.' 2:20

'I like UK, I don't want to go back to Poland. I think the economical situation here is much better. I can find a job in my profession in the way that I want when in Poland it would be much more difficult. I don't know I feel much better here.'4:10
before uni, she worked in a fashion warehouse

Identity
when asked about whether she is more Polish or British 'Polish because I lived there for my whole life. I like UK and the British culture but I'm still used to many Polish... features of the Polish culture.'
'Whenever I say that I'm Polish and I'm studying here - Chinese- they say 'Oh you're ambitious, you're brave because you moved on your own, you've got big dreams' I don't know because also my family's financial situation never was really good so like 'oh wow you can make it, you still can do it'... 'It makes me feel really good, it's really nice to hear that.'
'Because Poland was invaded many times, Polish people feel like victims all the time and I kind of feel... I feel like a victim because I'm Polish and it's all because of the history. if we weren't attacked so many times we wouldn't feel like victims.'
'It's really annoying, sometimes I'm like 'okay girl, you have a really good life but you're still complaining and you feel like nothing works for you' (laughs)' 23:40
'I think that have big goals, I'm really enjoying what I'm doing right now. I'm happy...' 25:40
see says being a migrant has made her more 'open-minded' - 'I could sometimes judge people because I didn't know. Judge people much more and here I moved and realised people are different. Everyone's different so I don't do it anymore.' 26:30
when talking about values: 'friends and friendship. I really appreciate my friends from Poland, we're still in touch. I think our friendship is much deeper now even with the distance. Also people that I meet her that I become friends with are really important. When you live here on your own it's often really tough, you miss home, you miss family and friends so I really appreciate people that I'm close to here.'
Polish community
-
family-orientated
'We prefer to spend time within our families. For example, in Poland it's common that we have really good relationships with family members who are not that close to us - aunties and uncles from different generations and here people rather stay close with their parents and it's not that common for family gatherings.'
sterotypes
'Well they often tell us that we're hard workers because of course many people here come for work especially after the EU opened the border.'
'That we are not that open to other nations, that we spend time only with each other and we don't want to socialise with other nationalities.' 17:00
'People tend to stay in their community.' 'When I used to work in the warehouse basically it was full of Polish people, these people barely spoke any English, they didn't even want to learn English, they were only there for money, spending time with each other and not really open to the British culture or not involved in relations with other people but Polish.' 17:50
-
'The Polish society organised many things connected to the Polish culture, festivals and so on so that's definitely staying with the roots.' 41:30
Aspirations
-
one of her most important values: 'Education. I really like what I'm doing, I really like studying, learning. It also develops you.' 29:00
'Here people are more self-oriented in their career and in what they want to do and in Poland they often don't want to do that.' 32:00
'I don't like being lazy... I couldn't just leave my work and go out partying knowing I have essays, a test, that I have exams. For me it's more important so until I do my job I won't go out, I won't do things that are irrelevant to my studies. ' 33:10
'I've always put expectations on myself - not always, to be fair when I first started coming to the UK and seeing the life here I started thinking about coming here for studies. I was like 14, 15 and started learning English by myself cos at my school it wasn't very good. Basically I learnt English only by myself not really at schools.. so I always put expectations on myself because I always wanted to do something more - I knew that the English education will help me more, it's just much more known in the world and much more useful and much more practical... because of that I was always working hard.'
'Apart from English I was never that motivated to learn any foreign languages. I liked them, I tried but it never worked for me so I knew that if I chose Chinese for my course I would be kind of forced to studying this so it will progress.' 37:50
