Animal Responses

The Brain
-
-
-
Medulla Oblongata
-
-
Contains the cardiac centre (heart rate), vasomotor centre (blood circulation) and respiratory centre (breathing rate+depth), receiving sensory information and coordinating responses via negative feedback
Reflex Actions
-
Blinking Reflex
Corneal Reflex
-
The sensory neuron enters the pons, connects to a relay neurone and then connects to the motor neurone
-
-
-
Most only involve three neurones (excluding knee-jerk reflexes), doesn't involve the brain, short pathway and mostly myelinated neurones
Knee Jerk Reflex
-
-
If stretching is unexpected, a reflex arc is created to contract the same muscle and vice versa
Only two neurones are involves, sensory and motor neurons so the response is very quick
Inhibition is impossible as the inhibitory neurone cannot reach the motor neurone as quickly as the sensory neurone. There is no non-myelinated relay neurone slowing the signal.

Coordinating Responses
Fight or Flight
-
-
-
-
If a threat is recognised, the cerebrum stimulates the hypothalamus
