The Student and Distance Education Simonson, M., Smaldino, S., and Zvacek, S. (2014). Teaching and Learning at a Distance: Foundations of Distance Education, 6th Edition. Information Age Publishing.
Quote: "It is important that students know the expectations of the instructor and the requirements to complete the course of study. Further, students need guidance and assurance when they are beginning a course of study at a distance, especially if this is their first time to engage in learning at a distance. They must understand the nuances of the amount of time, the manner of communication, and the means for submitting and retrieving materials. They must focus on their own learning and be able to judge whether they need additional assistance and how to proceed to request it." (Simonson et al., pp. 200, 2014).
Reflection: Too often we focus on content and technology when discussing and planning a distance education course. The students have to assume responsibility for their own learning, regardless of the delivery mechanism. Otherwise the learning experience will not be successful.
