WHAT IS IT?

It comes as tablets, capsules, granules that you dissolve in water, a liquid swallow, pellets inserted into the bottom (suppositories) and as an injection.

THERAPEUTIC USES
It is used to treat severe pain, for example an operation or a serious injury, or pain from cancer or a heart attack.

CONTRAINDICATIONS
For all opioids

Head injury (opioid analgesics interfere with pupillary responses vital for neurological assessment)
Raised intracranial pressure (opioid interfere with pupillary responses vital for neurological assessment)

DOSES
Acute pain
Subcutaneous injection, or by intramuscular injection: Initially 10mg every 4hrs.

PRECAUTIONS
Before taking morphine make sure you are not allergic to it or other opioid pain medications e.g codeine.
