War In The Trenches
The land between the trenches was named appropriately as No Mans Land. Men would try to attack by traveling through this area only to be mowed down by enemy fire. The trenches were not safe either. Artillery would continually bombard them.
-
the trenches were awful for the soldiers. there were rats, no fresh food, and many diseases in the trenches.
thanks to advancements in military technology, death tolls had reached its peak in 1916. an attack was launched by Germany near Verdun. Each side lost close to 300,000 troops. British troops attempted to join the fight and lost 20,000. by the time the battle was over each side lost almost half a million troops.
By 1915 each side had dug trenches to protect themselves. This form of fighting was known as trench warfare. this form of fighting was very ineffective causing huge loss of life and little territory gained.

The Conflict Grinds On
Victory For Germany was in site. An attack on Paris was near but the allies regrouped and defeated the germans on the northeast front of Paris.
The first battle of the Marne was the most important battle in the war. The Schleiffen plan was left in ruins. the attack on the west was a failure and Russia had already invaded Germany. in a panic the german military was split to fight against both Russia and France. the battle against France was left in a stalemate.
The Germans decided to come up with a plan they called the Schlieffen plan which relied heavily on speed. The plan was that they needed to defeat France first and then attack Russia. Most Germans believed they would be able to go through with the plan because at that time Russia was heavily under developed.
