english is a world language because it is spoken by a huge number of people , but it is not the language with the largest number of first-language speakers in the world. There are in fact nearly twice as many speakers of madarin chinese as there are of english. english in turn is closely followed by spain. But when it comes to distritrubution throughout the world, there is no language that beats english. 1/4 to 1/3 of the people in the world understand and speak english to some degree.
