Chile under Pinochet (1973-90):
Military junta (‘dictatorship’) led by General Augusto Pinochet seized power once again in 1973 due to the economic failure of the democratically elected government led by Salvador Allende (or at least that’s what was used as an excuse) → a coup on 11 September
This regime was characterized by the brutal persecution of dissidents → over 3 000 dead or missing, tens of thousands of prisoners were tortured, over 200 000 driven into exile (one of which was Ariel Dorfman)
Suppression of political activity
→ Leftist parties (socialist, marxist) were all banned
→ Congress was dissolved on 13 Sep.
Human rights violations
→ Political genocide - within first three months of rule, thousands of leftist have gone missing or have been killed
→ Up to 40,000 prisoners held at National Stadium from day of coup to November 1973
→ The Rettig Commission, a multipartisan effort by the Aylwin administration to discover the truth about the human-rights violations, listed a number of torture and detention centers
