War in the Trenches
In early 1915, armies on the western front had dug miles of trenches to protect themselves from the opposing side's fire. This became what is known as trench warfare.
Trenches put the soldiers in absolute misery. They were sleeping, washing, and eating mud. The trenches were filled with rats and there was no access to fresh food.
The land between opposing trenches was given the name of "no man's land." Survival while trekking no man's land was almost impossible. Trekkers were met with furious gun-fire which flung them on top of their original trenches.
While military strategies were excelling in all new ways. Weapons like machine guns and tanks had not delivered what was expected of them. All they achieved was killing more people with less power.
In February of 1916, the Germans began a massive attack near the French Verdun. Both sides suffered heavy losses. After an attack on the Germans by the British lead to a battle where each sides suffered more than half of a million causalities.
