H think of Brahman in 3 ways:
- existing everywhere, non-personal God - Brahman
- being within heart of everyone (antaryami)
- personal God or Lord (Bhagavan)

The Tri-Murti - Brahma
Brahma has 4 heads - north, south, east, west

Mala - a string of beads, help to count chant mantras during mediation
Saraswati - consort of Brahma, goddess of knowlegde, the arts, wisdom and learning

Vishnu is special in 4 ways: ..............................................................
- represents soul of entire universe
- gave birth to Brahma who created universe
- enters the heart of every living being to become 'the lord within'
- worshipped through avatars
Images of Vishnu - remind H to follow religious & moral laws (Vishnu steps in when necessary to restore moral order)

Saraswati - consort of Brahma, goddess of learning ... thought to be mother of the Vedas
Lakshmi - means beauty, prosperity & wealth, consort of Vishnu, especially worshipped during Diwali

Parvati - reincarnation of Sati (Shiva's first wife) - killed herself after father abused Shiva, Shiva became a wandering holy man and Parvati followed him around and finally won his love
Durga - fierce & powerful goddess, has many arms to fight & is often portrayed riding on lion or tiger - weapons are bow & arrow
Kali - fierce and wild goddess, holds sword, severed head, bowl to catch blood and trident

Rama - story illustrates human virtues: wisdom, justice, equality, obedience
Hanuman - monkey warrior - his symbol is a mace, meaning strength and authority - also remembered for devotion to Rama & Sita
Krishna - most well-known avatar, thought to be very approachable, loving, caring & mischievous - popular god. Krishna = dark. Wears yellow robes -> represents earth
Ganesha - elephant-headed god,
Story of Ganesha - Parvati sent Ganesha to guard the door of their home whilst she took a bath. Shiva returned but Ganesha, not recognising him, refused to let him in. In rage, Shiva cut off his head. Parvati insisted on him bringing him back so he was given an elephant head.

The self (atman) - never-changing, eternal, conscious, active, alive
The body - ever-changing, temporary, unconscious, unable to move, dead
Human life - samsara, karma, moksha
Samsara - a continuous cycle of birth, death and rebirth

Sanatana Dharma refers to the duties that link the eternal soul to God according to ancient scriptures
Sanatana Dharma consists of following:......................................
- 1 - always think of whats right and whats wrong about any action
- 2 - remember God in your heart & mind
- 3 - learning more about God and dharma from holy scriptures
- 4 - trying to reach moksha
- 5 - offering worship to God either in the temple or at home
- 6 - feeding animals and birds, and caring for plants and trees
- 7 - showing respect to elders and caring for the needy
