Art vs. Porn
What distinguishes art from pornography?
The sexualization of the human body
Intention of the artist
Perception of the audience
The influence New Media has on the objectification of the human body
Instagram models are a huge thing nowadays. They’re all over the popular page posting unrealistic photographs of their perceived perfect lives.
As society watches their lives from the other side of the screen, we often times begin to compare our lives to theirs.
The influence of social media on people’s self image is huge in this time.
As we see people like the Kardashians posting erotic photographs, we subconsciously approve of the normalization of these behaviors
If they can do it anyone can do it,
But once again, it is up to the viewer to decide to glorify or objectify.
It is not labeled as porn until someone labels it as porn.
So really, it is up to the audience to decide whether they believe it to be art or porn.
If you perceive it as art, then it is set in your mind as being art.
Just like the perception of the audience, the intention of the artist is also very important.
If the artist does not mean to objectify the body, and believes that what is being created is art, then it is more likely to be considered to be art rather than porn.
the human body, especially female, is being hyper sexuality within society
In America, we are taught to sexualize the female nipple, but not the males?
When a woman shows her nipple, it is considered to be pornographic
When a man shows his nipple, nothing is questioned
Through new media, many females post photos of their body.
Most likely, they are posting because they are confident with themselves, not because they want to be portrayed as pornographic
The ways in which the viewers perceive the content will determine whether they decide to objectify the content or to normalize it
In today’s media world, it is becoming the norm to post what some people would label as erotic photographs
Through my research, I hope to offer a better understanding to the reader about the many complexities that go into determining whether something should be labeled as art or as porn.
There are many complex factors which play a role in the determination of labeling content as either artistic or pornographic
