MIXTURE SEPARATION METHODS
Heterogeneous
Sieving
Sieving allows mixtures of solids of different sizes to be separated.
Filtration
In this techinque, suspended solid fragments are extracted from a liquid.
Sedimentation and decantation
This techinque, based on the difference of densities, allows the components of a suspension to be separated.
Centrifuging and decantation
Centrifuging is method of separating the components of a suspension or a liquid colloid according to their density, by spinning at a high velocity.
Decantation
A separating funnel allows the liquid components of heterogeneous mixtures with different densities to be separated.
Flotation
This method allows mixtures of similarly sizes solids to be separated by density.
Leaching
This method allows the separation of mixtres of solid components of similarly sized particles.
Magnetic separation
This method allows the components with magnetic properties, to be separated from the rest of the components.
Homogeneous
Vaporization
This method is used tto separate solution of solids in liquid solvent.
DIstillation
This method allows solutions of liquids with different boilling points to be separated.
Chromatography
Thistechinque allows the components to be separated according to the speed at wich they travel thought an absorbent surface, such as a piece of paper
