In my civilization, they are the second highest rank on the social pyramid.
If they tell you a message from the gods you should always believe and respect them because they are connected with the gods.

Ziggurats
We will meet in there when a priest has something to say or a message from the gods that is important.
If the priest or I says that there is a meeting in one of the ziggurats, it's required to go there because there would be something important that you must know.

How to become a priest
You have to prove you have some sort of a connection with the gods. One way you can do that is to tell me a message from one of them and then I'll ask a real priest and see if you're right.
You have to prove that you can talk in front of all the people in the ziggurats and not tell them something incorrect on accident or on purpose.
You have to prove that you can be trusted by everyone and not just me. How you do that is by going in the middle of the civilization and gather some people. You can tell them a message from the gods and then another priest will either say you're correct or incorrect.
