Ladson-Billings Myths
Myth:There's currently an education gap that can easily be fixed
Education is not static. The students who are succeeding do not slow down just so that their peers can catch up with them.
The current system has been set up to favor white students and so it will be impossible to close a gap without changing the way school's function
"Parents just don't care"
Understanding that there are cultural differences that impact how parents express interest in schooling
Latinos value education but think their role is limited to ensuring children attend and are respectful (Weinstein, Curran, Tomlinson-Clarke)
Asian families have high beliefs about academic excellence but don't interfere with schooling
Cultural deficit theory
We should not judge students based off of white culture knowledge (i.e. Bach, Mozart) and should instead bridge cultural gaps by utilizing cultural icons they are familiar with
