Etiology
HIV after time
Transmitted during breastfeeding or delivering
Sexual Intercourse
Transmitted via blood
Pathophysiology
Infects CD4 helper T cells
Leads to progressive failure of the immune system
Allows opportunistic infections and cancer cells to thrive
Clinical Signs & Symptoms
Sudden unexpected illnesses
Development of pneumonia
Weight loss
Loss of apetite
Fever, Malaise, and night sweats
Diagnostic Tests
ELISA test
If ELISA test is positive, a Western blot test should be done to back the diagnosis
Low CD4 helper T cell (<200),
Palpation of swollen Lymph nodes
Differential Diagnosis
Herpes Simplex
Candidiasis
Cytomegalovirus
Lymphoma
Toxoplasmosis
Respiratory Management
Oxygen Support
Mechanical Ventilation if signs of respiratory failure
Bronchial Hygiene
Avoid anything that may cause an infection
