- - - - Is this person really out to stand between you and your goal or just an annoying, disagreeable person?
      - What does this person want? Why are they acting the way they are? All behaviour has a purpose.We do what we do to get something we want.
      - Focused Adversaries: Want to get their own way and view you as an obstacle. It's nothing personal about you. Show them your goals do not conflict and cooperating with you might contribute to their own success. Or contain them by increasing your leverage & getting support from those with more power or influence and enforcing your boundaries.
      - Vengeful Adversaries: Out to get you personally. Pointed remarks,sneaky, cold shoulders, disparaging comments. Examine your actions to see what you might have unintentionally done to venge them. Confront them directly.' I don't think our working relationship is going very well. I'd like to see if we can figure out how to improve things. What do you think about the situation'? If they are not rational, contain them and take steps to protect your reputation.
      - Emotional Adversaries: Emotions out of control which leads to disfunctional behaviour with everyone. Remember, their behaviour is triggered not by your actions but by their needs. Remain calm. Respond with a question rather than a comeback. Or stay out of their way.
      - Annoying people are a good test of your self-discipline. Convert your adversaries to allies or take steps to contain their destructive potential.
      - Tip: Don't kick a problem upstairs. You loose political capital.
      - Tip: Adversarial interactions often fall into such predictable patterns that they can be considered a game. Understanding the pattern can help you make the next move.
