He controlled the north of England, and held many royal positions.

He used the castle as a residence at the centre of his Yorkshire estates- it acted as his principle residence until his death.
He also founded Kirkham Priory (1130), Rievaulx Abbey (1132) and Warden Abbey (1136)

The estate was passed onto his sister's husband, Peter De Roos.

Fursan De Roos dies in 1227 and his son William De Roos succeeds Helmsley. He expands Helmsley, and builds a new chapel.
William De Roos III gains Helmsley, who remodelled the castle, including a new hall,kitchen, apartments and also heightened he West Tower
Thomas De Roos is executed for treason and the castle is confiscated by the crown and is granted to George, Duke of Gloucester.
When George dies the castle is granted to Richard, Duke of Gloucester (later Richard III)
After Richard III is beaten at the Battle of Bosworth, Helmsley is restored to Edmund De Roos.
