Chapter 11
Invented Strategies
“strategies based on place value, properties of operations and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction (or multiplication and division).”
Kids are expected to “Develop, discuss, and use efficient, accurate, and generalizable methods to compute sums and differences of while numbers in base-ten notation, using their understanding of place value and the properties of operations.”
Not the standard algorithm (including manipulatives to demonstrate the standard algorithm), counting by ones.

The environment

-
Things to keep in mind
-
-
-
Discuss right and wrong ideas with respect, take wrong ideas seriously.
-
-
-
-
-
Direct Modeling
-
Using 1:1 ratios of drawings, manipulatives, etc to model math.
To phase out, use some of the subsequent strategies:
-
-Ask students who have just solved a problem with manipulatives to see whether they can do it mentally.
-
Other ideas
-
Procedural fluency- skill in carrying out procedures flexibly, accurately, efficiently, and appropriately.”
Create an environment that rewards thinking creatively and being flexible, especially in problem solving.
Important extra notes
It is necessary to teach the standard algorithm and for it be understood. It can be a useful tool, and it must be displayed as one of the tools. Make sure kids know that they have to explain what they are doing.
