MATTER- unit 6
Examples- air, snow, balloon, water, brick, sponge, YOU, phone, corn, etc.
Non-examples: light, heat, sound, any energies, etc.
definition- mass describes the amount of matter in an object
Type of measurement: grams
-
DENSITY
-
The less volume an object has, the more density it has.
Examples: oil/water, styrafoam/ceramic
The oil has less density (more volume) than the water, therefore it rises to the top.
A styrofoam cup is less dense than a ceramic cup, so the styrofoam cup will float in water and the ceramic cup will sink.
VOLUME
definition: the amount of space an object takes up.
Examples: 15 cm3, 100 ft3
Measured in cubic units, or a 3 after a measurement.
MATTER definition- matter is anything that has mass and takes up space #
Examples: balloon, bones, crystals, space suit, body, watermelon, air, water, table, gases, computer, etc.
Non-examples: heat, light, sound, any energies, etc.
WEIGHT
definition: weight is the measure of the gravitational pull on the object's mass
weight can change; mass cannot
Mass and weight are connected because mass never changes, but weight can.
