Implications of Managers
Some people are more ‘politically astute’ than others:
More aware of the underlying politics
Can manage impressions

Leads to higher employee performance, commitment and satisfaction
Competence makes people comply not because the power holder has the ‘right’ to request compliance thats why expert power has been found to be most strongly and consistently related to effective performance.
POLITICS:
An effective manager accepts the political nature of organisations
assessing political behaviour can help better predict the actions of others and use information to formulate political strategies that will gain advantages.
employees with poor political skills/unwilling to play the politics game, relates organisational politics to lower satisfaction, increased anxiety, and higher turnover.
Definition of Power
Power refers to a capacity that A has to influence the behaviour of B so B acts in accordance with A's wishes
- A potential that need not be actualised to be effective. ie, power may exist but may not be used
- A dependency relationship, ie. B is dependent on A

Personal Power
definition:
comes from an individual's unique characteristics; they may or may not have formal power
Expert Power:
- is based on the extent to which others attribute knowledge and expertise on the power holder.
- experts are perceived to have knowledge and understanding only in certain well-defined areas.
- the target must perceive the power holder to be credible, trustworthy and relevant before expert power is granted.
- staff specialists often depend on
expertise as only source of power.
Referent Power:
- arises out of admiration for another person and desire to be like that person, e.g. celebrities, successful‛ leaders
- managers with referent power must be attractive to
subordinates so that subordinates will want to identify with them, regardless of whether the managers have the ability to reward or punish or whether they have the legitimacy.
