Ethnic groups
Pashtuns are the majority ethnic group. They are the highest group on the social ladder, dominating governmental bodies. They consist of Sunni Muslims and speak Pastu.
Hazaras mainly live in 'Hazarajat', making up 9% of the population, and are on the bottom of the social ladder. They are believed to be descendants of Genghis Khan;s army and have Mongolian origins. They mainly consist of Shi'ite Muslims.
Differences in Muslims
Sunni Muslims believe the Koran specifies that the new leader should be elected from among those capable of doing the job. "Sunni" means "one who follows the traditions of the Prophet."
Shi'a Muslims believe that the new leader should come from Muhammad's family, specifically his cousin and son-in-law, refusing to recognize authority in any Muslim leaders. "Shi'a" means "a supportive party of people."
